A Flight Leader in the 304th Fighter Squadron, Walther became the highest-scoring German ace in the war, earning most of his twenty-four kills during the Russian offensive against Gibraltar. Despite being wounded during a cruise missile strike on his air base outside Düsseldorf, Walther led his flight on almost a dozen sorties against heavily escorted Russian transport planes that were reinforcing the landing zones in the area.
