Baranov's elite 125th Ground Attack Squadron, originally based at Perovskoye, near Moscow, was the only unit in the Russian Air Force authorized to fly nuclear attack missions during the war. Baranov's flight personally launched the nuclear cruise missiles that sank the French carrier Charles de Gaulle, and took part in the tactical nuclear strike against Eurofed armored units outside Frankfurt later in the war. Experts in all aspects of ground attack operations, his flight was the first to be equipped with the more advanced Su-40 Scorpion strike craft.
