CADS

Comprehensive Air Defense System

Orbital Lasers have a few drawbacks: they can't fire on targets close to the ground (under 1,000 ft), and they don't function when the sun is brewing up a solar storm of charged particles.

Problem solved.

Force Composition[]

  • SAM Trailer
  • SAM Trailer
  • Fire Control Radar
  • Fire Control Radar
  • THAAD TEL
  • THAAD TEL

Sensory[]

Each THEL trailer has its own X-band fire control radar, while the Fire Control radars are massive X-band AESA “faces” that are capable of picking out a F-16 at a distance of 350 kilometers. A GPS Blue-force-tracker is standard for each component.

Upgrades[]

L-band Radar[]

To improve detection against stealth aircraft, the Fire Control radars in a CADS battery can be upgraded with a small L-band AESA “face” panel above the original X-band radar. This improves detection against stealth targets tenfold.

Armament[]

THEL(4)[]

The Tactical High Energy Lasers in CADS have their own close-range X-band radar to detect and fire on incoming projectiles, allowing them to fire independently of the Fire Control trailer. THEL bursts are equivalent to 40mm shells, move at about 300,000km per second, and thanks to the battery's abundant power supply, comes in quantities of 10 per minute. The lasers are powerful enough to deliver their firepower to a maximum distance of 5 kilometers.

SAM (2)[]

CADS has two SAM trailers that hold four ready-to-fire SL-AIM-88s each. It requires the Fire Control trailer to be intact, making it relatively vulnerable to HARMs.

SL-AIM-88 (8)[]

The Surface Launched variant of the AIM-88 differs only that the SL- gets a compressed gas charge to hoist it out of its launching tube, and that it has folding fins. From the ground, it can hit a target 100 kilometers away.

THAAD Trailer (2)[]

CADS' ABM capabilities come in the form of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile. They are found in 8-missile transport-erector-launchers. THAAD is a two-stage hit-to-kill missile, consisting of a powerful rocket booster and a semi-active radar homing seeker. The missile can streak into the sky and smash apart a missile before it begins to re-enter the earth's atmosphere.

Upgrades[]

THAAD-ER[]

A measure to counter hypersonic glide vehicles—which SHIELD can take care of fairly easily—the ER version packs a two-stage booster, providing the kill vehicle with increased velocity, and therefore, range and damage. However, only 5 missiles can be fitted inside a launcher.

Protection[]

5mm Aluminum sheetmetal. Camouflage netting is also standard.

Upgrades[]

EMP Hardening[]

Gives all the electronics in CADS easy-to-replace fuzes, decreasing recovery time after an EMP strike.

Mobility[]

The entire CADS must be towed around, mostly by (optionally manned) M3980 Ground Mobility Vehicles. The entire system, including their GMVs, weighs in at 60 tons.

Upgrades[]

None.
