It was definitely larger than an eagle, with a sleek black body the size of a Laborador retriever. Its wingspan was at least ten feet across. (…) The creatures circled the train like vultures, delighting the tourists. Percy wasn't delighted. The monsters had glowing red eyes, sharp beaks, and vicious talons.
- The Son of Neptune
Big flying monsters. Nasty and love gold. The FCI named their AH-1Z attack gunships after such mythological creatures.
1 AIRCRAFT
Main Armament[]
The Gryphon is armed with a M197 20mm 3-barrel Gatling chaingun, 38 Hydra-70 rockets, and eight AGM-114 HELLFIRE ATGMs.
M197 20mm Gatling[]
The M197 20mm Gatling gun is situated in a chin mount, just below the aircraft's passive sensor suite. It fires 20mm AP and HE rounds from a 750 round magazine. This provides it with the firepower to tear up light vehicles, cover, infantry inside the cover, and the surrounding environment.
Hydra-70[]
The Gryphon carries 38 70mm Hydra-70 High-Explosive rockets in two separate rocket pods. Each rocket is capable of bringing 2 kilograms of high explosive to a target 500 meters away, and can blow a light vehicle sky-high. Alternatively it can take out cover, foliage and infantry at the same time.
AGM-114[]
The AGM-114 HELLFIRE is a tried-and-tested ATGM. The missile is Active Millimeter guided, able to blast through 450mm of RHA with its 20lb tandem shape-charge warhead, and can do so when the target is 10 kilometers away.
Upgrades[]
A) AIM-9
To provide aircraft deterrence, the Gryphon can carry two AIM-9 Sidewinders on its wingtips, providing it with the capability to engage enemy aircraft.
Armor[]
The Gryphon is poorly armored for a Gunship, only protected by a thin layer of Aluminum and Kevlar. This provides resistance to 7.62mm AP fire. In addition, an ECM station, flares and chaff are standard.
Propulsion[]
The Gryphon is powered by two T700-GE-201C turboshafts, power a single 4-blade rotor. This provides it with the capability to cruise at 300 mph, and the agility to evade AAA fire.
